Commonly called by his first and last names, Gareth Andre Theodore Henry, is a badminton player who was born in Madeville, Jamaica. He has competed in numerous Central and Caribbean Games, several Pan Am Men’s Team Championships, and the BWF International Challenge/Series. From an early age, Gareth Henry knew that he was interested in men. After moving to live with his uncle, Henry began to open up about his sexuality and began participating in gay rights organizations.
Gareth Henry rose to become the leader of the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals and Gays (J-Flag) after the group’s former leader was stabbed and killed in a 2004 homophobic act of violence. During his four year membership with the organization he not only witnessed several of his friends get murdered for their sexuality, but he also aided police in identifying the victims of these hate crimes.
On February 14, 2007, Gareth Henry was assaulted by several policemen after being trapped by a mob of people at a drugstore. Henry was with a group of other men during the incident and was questioned by officers regarding his sexuality. In the months following the assault, Gareth Henry continued to receive death threats from Jamaican citizens and policemen due to his sexuality and his hospitality to other gay men. He left Jamaica, the following year, in search for a safer life in Canada. He is currently seeking reform in Jamaica by working with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
Gareth Henry currently lives with his husband, Aron Charles-Henry, in Canada. Realizing that mass amounts of men are undergoing the violence that he experienced in Jamaica, Henry is diligently working to reform the Jamaican government and hold them accountable for the actions of their citizens and officials. Despite several meetings with the police, by various members of the gay community, Henry realizes that change will have to come from above. Understanding the HIV/AIDS issue that many gay men suffer, in addition to the violence, Henry believes that radical actions will have to be taken in order to create a change in the country.

Gareth Henry is no stranger to the cruelty against LGBTQ individuals in a variety of different countries. Once a native to Jamaica, he was forced to relocate to Canada due to prosecution from those in his home. To this day, Jamaican law still allows the prosecution of those in same-sex relationships.
After being attacked on multiple occasions, and even harassed by the police force, Gareth Henry knew that something had to change. He was granted asylum in Canada, and now uses his experiences from his home country to help other individuals in a similar situation. He states, “Moving to Canada was an opportunity for me in choosing between life and death.”
In Toronto, Gareth Henry found work with two LGBTQ organizations. For his career, he directs an aids foundation. Outside of his work there, he volunteers for Rainbow Railroad, a nonprofit that assists LGBTQ people who live in countries that persecute them. He is no stranger to this life-changing relocation, so he is able to bring insider knowledge into his assistance of others in finding a better life. In 2016 alone, he was able to help 60 refugees relocate, many of them from his home country of Jamaica.
Although he lives in Canada now, he still works to improve the living situation of LGBTQ individuals in Jamaica. There have been positive strides in the right direction, the third PRiDE celebration being held in the country in 2017, but violence against the community continues. Gareth Henry hears stories of men doused with acid or attacked by dogs, but he remains hopeful in the work they’re doing. He is a proud supporter of all of the LGBTQ people of Jamaica and urges them to stay strong and diligent in their fight against prosecution.
A man who has faced a hard life, Gareth Henry brings hope to those in similar situations. His fortitude shows that although one may come from a situation of hardship, one must fight to bring justice to light in a world full of hatred and malice.
